ORBITEC is creating several advanced simulant materials that share many of the unique properties of lunar regolith. Lunar regolith contains numerous agglutinates – small particles bonded together with glass created from micro-meteoroids hitting the surface of the Moon. These agglutinates also contain small droplets of metallic iron, including nanophase iron. Not found naturally on Earth, nanophase iron can significantly change the characteristics of the regolith.
In addition to sales of standard JSC-1A and JSC-Mars-1A simulants, ORBITEC has developed a proprietary process to create agglutinates with nanophase iron from any feedstock simulant. These feedstocks are also used to produce high-fidelity lunar dust simulants by grinding the simulated agglutinate particles to a very fine powder.
